Challenges in Rural Areas

Many IoT applications are being deployed in order to support urban areas, for example, smart cities. However,  applications need to be deployed and to be extended into rural areas. Rural areas have specific characteristics that create challenges around issues such as quality of life and healthcare, wealth creation from primary industries including agriculture and of course monitoring conservation. Some of the specifics include:

  • small, often dispersed populations
  • narrow and uneven channels of information flow
  • rapid change in population structures and economic activity bases
  • restricted access to digital infrastructure
  • lack of provision for rural travel/social journeys – updates to timetables and disruptions
